Before John Winchester's son Sam turned 6 months old, he had a wife named Mary. He worked as a mechanic. He had a house. He had two sons. He was a former Marine living an average life.

That was before Sam turned 6 months old.

That was before a demon killed his wife and set fire to his house and set him on a path that would lead him into the darkest depths the world has to offer. Before he uprooted his sons and brought them with him on hunts, raised them on credit card schemes and semi-automatics and charms and sigils and rocksalt. Before he went on his quest to send the yellow-eyed son of a bitch who started it all back to Hell.

Now he's a name known around the hunting circles, a master tactician and a thorn in the rear of any demon he runs across with an eye for figures and a fanatical need to destroy the thing that sent his life spinning into the darkness. He works alone because he tends to get people killed otherwise; not because he means to, but because he's reckless and it works for him. Sometimes not for other people, though.
